Where to Eat Now 2012

Restaurant Of The Day

Digg’s Taco Shop

Digg’s Taco Shop

Dallas

Of all the taco joints springing up around town (is it the economy?), this newest en-try, in University Park, offers good value and a relaxing atmosphere (think blond-wood booths, dish towel napkins, and wee cacti in cans on the tables). We tackled the taco combo, choosing braised free-range chicken and grilled mahimahi plus a cup of black beans and a timbale of cilantro rice. We couldn’t resist the margarita popsicle for dessert; it goes down fine on a warm summer night. Beer, wine, & margaritas.

Pat’s Pick

Triniti

Triniti

A lot of money has gone into Triniti, most evident in its design, by Houston’s MC2Architects. It’s gorgeous, with massive frosted-glass doors that lead into a soaring room with walls the color of whipped cream. As you might expect from the sophisticated look, the menu is refined and, when it takes a notion, cutting-edge. The kitchen is under the direction of co-owner and executive chef Ryan Hildebrand (formerly with Textile) and chef de cuisine Jose Hernandez (previously at Philippe), and when those two are on, they’re on.

Texas Icons

R.I.P. DP, 1891-2012

Dublin Dr Pepper, the iconic Texas soft drink that remained loyal to its original formula until the final bottle, died on January 11, in Plano. It was 120 years old.

New + Noteworthy

Grady’s Line Camp Steakhouse

Grady Spears has set up shop at this ranch-style restaurant in Tolar, a tiny town near Fort Worth, where rodeo attire abounds and there’s a porch with views of the setting sun. Even better, the food reflects Spears’s famous attention to detail.
